How To Live A Long Life

Many throughout the history of mankind have searched for the so-called “secret” of  long life. A recent search of the internet, after typing in the subject; “Long Life” returned over 725 million results!

While most of us acknowledge there’s no such thing as a “secret” formula or a “Fountain of Youth”– some may not realize the simple truth regarding this matter is found within the pages of God’s Holy Word. The Bible does indeed reveal  how we can live a long life. Not only can we live a longer earthly life, but afterwards–we can enjoy an everlasting life. Only God knows the answer to this age old question—how long will I live?

THE LIFESPAN OF MANKIND–Does the following verse represent  the “average” lifespan of mankind today—or is it referring to the Israelites, while in the Wilderness?

Psalms 90: 10; 10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; (70) and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, (80) yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

Worldwide Life Expectancy: 69 years (67 years for males and 71.1 years for females) for 2017 estimate, according to (world rank order) The World Factbook

One of the Ten Commandments promises long life to those who honor their parents

Exodus 20: 12   12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

The following verses address this subject:

Psalms 91: 16; 16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

Proverbs 4: 10 10Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many.

Proverbs 9: 11; 11For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.

Proverbs 10: 27;  27The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

Proverbs 28: 16;  16The prince that wanteth understanding is also a great oppressor: but he that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days

1 Kings 3: 14; 14And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days. (God speaking to Solomon)

What about strict diets and exercise? Why do Christians give thanks to God, and prayers before every meal?

1 Timothy 4: 2 -10; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; 3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. 4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. 6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. 7 But refuse profane and old wives fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.

8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. 9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. 10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.

The Bible tells us we can either prolong or shorten our lives on earth. No particular life style, our DNA, a secret formula or any magic can assure us a long life on earth. Thankfully, our LORD has the power over life and death. He, alone, is able to extend our earthly lives, heal and restore our bodies and even raise us from the dead!  Eternal life IS only possible through His son—Jesus Christ.

Romans 6: 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord

John 5: 24; 24Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life

Daniel 12: 2; 2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt

Ecclesiastes 12:1  Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them
